A Theory of Political Polarization*

چکیده
We present a simple theory of voters’ preferences over representatives, assuming that a representative will vote on one’s behalf. Few, if any elected representatives are capable of unilaterally implementing their platforms: rather, they choose between options generated by other actors and/or external events. When this is the case, voters’ preferences over candidates’ platforms will almost always be asymmetric even if voters’ preferences over policy outcomes are symmetric. Furthermore, these induced preferences tend to prefer more extreme (“polarizing”) representatives when the legislative agenda is independent of the status quo. *Sections 3 & 4 are currently incomplete. Of course, comments on all parts are very welcome. Prepared for presentation at the Colloquium on Law Economics and Politics at New York University School of Law, September 5, 2017. Density and Polarization Profiles of Dipolar Hard Ellipsoids Confined between Hard Walls: A Density Functional Theory Approach
The density and polarization profiles of the dipolar hard ellipsoids confined between hard walls are studied using the density functional theory (DFT). The Hyper-Netted Chain (HNC) approximation is used to write excess grand potential of the system with respect to the bulk value. The number density is expanded up to zero and first order in polarization to find the results. For the zero order in...

In this paper I simulate neighborhood level political migration dynamics following a change in neighborhood racial composition using SimPolSeg, an original agent-based modeling software program. SimPolSeg simulates agent behavior according to the Migration-Polarization (MP) theory of partisan sorting (Anastasopoulos 2014a). Dynamic simulations using SimPolSeg demonstrate how non-white migration...
متن کاملWorking Paper No. 13-41 the Political Polarization Index
American politics have become increasingly polarized in recent decades. To the extent that political polarization introduces uncertainty about economic policy, this pattern may have adversely affected the economy. According to existing theories, a rise in the volatility of fiscal shocks faced by individuals should result in a decline in economic activity. Moreover, if polarization is high aroun...

Regarding this, the claim from this article is that if we understand the system of religious knowledge of Imam Kho...
